Familiarity continues

Jonathan Markham

Ever since I began to prepare last weeks sermon, God has reminded me repeatedly how easy it is for me to forget that God is God. The number of times He repeats it in the OT (more than 170!) should be a clue! If God’s people forgot so easily with the pillars to remind them then the likelihood of my doing any better is small . Its not that I forget God, its that I forget He is God. The utterly awesome uniqueness and power of His deity.
Another powerful reminder came to me as I read  a blog post from Perry Noble in which he details the things that scare him as a pastor (if you want to know the things that scare pastors his list is crushingly accurate!) but its his observation that God is not included in the list which brings the whole thing into context.
Proverbs 9:10 tells us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (underlining mine). So if this is where it starts that maybe we should not be surprised when we struggle for wisdom. Of course that does not mean we should cower terrified in the corner when we think about God but fearing God is to “ reverence His majesty and respect His power” (repeat those words slowly and carefully a few times to allow their meaning to sink in).
So how are you doing this week, have you taken some time to remember He is God, is it making a difference?

No Dieting!

Some times it feels like a "Christian diet,” or maybe a way of getting God’s attention so He will pay more attention to our prayers. Yes its that time again, time for what has become part of our ...
